Current Status of the .eu domain name

The long awaited agreement between the European Commission and Eurid has recently been signed. As a result, the latter one has started negotiations with ICANN in order to include the .eu domain name in the international DNS servers.

Upon reaching this milestone the .eu implementation and roll-out can finally be initiated.
This process will most likely start middle of 2005 and will take 6 - 9 months to complete. The launch will most likely happen in 3 phases:

  • "Sunrise Period 1": only for registered trademarks and public bodies
  • "Sunrise Period 2": also open for holders of other rights recognized in member states
  • "Open registration": free registration on the basis of "First Come, First Served"

It is expected that the first Sunrise Period will be started end 2005.

In order to increase your chances for registering your .eu domain name, we advise you to protect your trade name now in one of the European member states.
