Everything you should know about .EU domain name registration

As a part of EURid’s service, it is possible for registrars to get information about the domain names they have registered via the on-line registration interface. Until recently, this feature was returning more information than strictly needed, namely the sequence number of the domain name asked for and by using this sequence number registrars were able to extract lists of names.

This is no longer possible.

While it was still available, the feature did not affect the registration system in any way and as such did not jeopardise the fairness of the system since all accredited registrars had the same possibilities.
As soon as this extraneous side effect of the online service was recognised, EURid removed it.

In fact this flow did affect clients of .EU and more specificaly professionals genuinely trying to register important domain names for their businesses. What appeared with this bug is that a company such as Ovidio, very recently set up in Cyprus did use the services of 400 US registrars... all recently setup as well and sharing the same postal address... to register more than 85.000 very valuable .EU domain names. If this is not cybersquatting... then what is it?
