.FR opening - The .fr domain names will finally be available for public... not without restrictions!
Without restrictions? No… that would not be the kind of thing French usually do. The .fr extension will only be available to those who have a postal address in France! Why? Well the .fr being aimed at a specific geographical area it seemed natural to restrict its use a little. And it is also probably to ease down the cyber squatters who will find it slightly more difficult to put their hands on the precious extension. Will it be controllable? The AFNIC warns that controls could be done… my guess is that they will hardly ever do such a thing with the little resources they have.
Anyway the French public has a genuine interest in the opportunity of acquiring their own .fr domain names. According to a recent survey for the free newspaper 20Minutes 53% of the persons interrogated thought owning a .fr was important. And above all the French public has a fairly good idea of how they would use their .fr domain names. 39% of them thought of it to personalise their blogs, some 55% of them would use the .fr to have a sexier email address and a vast majority of the, 74% would create their own website.
